Describing the collaboration as another significant milestone in the history of the FAS, Mayor Zainudin said, “We are pleased to work with StarHub on this collaboration as they are the leading sports content provider in Singapore. The telecast of the League Cup on StarHub’s Football Channel reflects the expanding demand for the S.League, especially with the S.League ranked as one of the Top 10 Leagues in Asia. I would also like to thank FAS Vice-President and Singapore Pools’ Chief Executive Officer, Mr Tan Soo Nan, for helping to initiate this move that allows for more of our matches to be telecast ‘live’ on television. We are glad that with this collaboration, we can now increase the commercial returns for our corporate sponsors and enhance the viewership experience of football fans in Singapore.”

StarHub’s COO, Mr Tan, was equally upbeat about the collaboration, “We are delighted to be able to raise the profile of local sports with the addition of the League Cup to our compelling line-up of football programming, and play a part in the continuing progress that Singapore football has made. I believe our collaboration with the FAS to telecast ‘live’ League Cup matches will benefit football fans as they can now look forward to enjoying ‘live’ football on StarHub TV even during the off-season for European football in June.”

Annex A: Background of the League Cup

The League Cup is an annual knockout football competition in Singapore contested by all 12 teams in the S.League. It was launched in 2007 as the third major domestic trophy alongside the S.League Championship and the Singapore Cup.

The inaugural League Cup in 2007 was won by Woodlands Wellington while the current holders are Gombak United, who lifted the trophy after defeating Korean side Super Reds 2-1 in the final last year. Incidentally, both wins marked the first pieces of silverware in the respective histories of both Woodlands and Gombak.

This year, the 12 teams will be divided into four groups of three in the preliminary round which will be played on a round-robin basis. The top two teams from each group qualify for the next round which will be played on a knockout (single elimination) basis. The 2009 League Cup Final is scheduled to take place on 19 June (Friday) at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
