Singapore, 22 April 2022 – Celebrating Earth Day and to shine a spotlight on the importance of preserving the shared natural environment, StarHub is inviting customers to take part in its freshly-launched digital sustainability initiatives. They can carry out a series of simple actions that will culminate in the removal of up to 500 tonnes or more of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This is equivalent to the carbon emissions from about 250 round trips between Singapore and London. Every action counts in the fight against the effects of climate change, and StarHub is working on all fronts to achieve its bold 2030 sustainability targets of halving its greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2), as well as increasing its use of renewable energy to 30% of total consumption.
For a start, all customers need to do is to tap ‘Plant-A-Tree with StarHub’ digitally on the My StarHub app, between today and 31 May 2022. The more customers pledge, the more trees StarHub will plant. Working in close cooperation with the National Parks Board’s registered charity and IPC, Garden City Fund, StarHub will support Singapore’s City in Nature vision by planting trees to benefit our native flora and fauna. The pledging of support is available free of charge, and customers can join in the fun to support this good cause from wherever they are.
That’s not all. StarHub is going one step further to rally, engage, and partner customers on its Green journey. Five StarHub customers will be chosen, by means of a ‘StarHub Green Quiz’, to plant the trees along with three of their friends, to spruce up the environment together with StarHub senior leaders and staff volunteers in the third quarter of this year. The quiz aims to raise awareness of climate change and encourage pragmatic ways to greenify our environment for customers. No quiz participants will walk away empty handed – they will either win a Plant-A-Tree experience, or receive an exclusive discount voucher at online plant store Rooted, where they can be home gardeners and contribute to fighting climate change in their own ways.
Since 2012, StarHub has stepped up in support of NParks' #OneMillionTrees movement and the Government’s vision of a City in Nature, having sponsored over 400 trees across the region.
"We are passionate about Green and going Greener with our customers. It is our promise to put sustainability at the heart of our day-to-day business operations, in tandem with our DARE+ five-year strategic transformation. We are delighted to launch our new Green logo and customer campaign on Earth Day, signalling our strong intent to build a more liveable future together with our customers, partners, and employees,” said Ms Veronica Lai, Chief Corporate and Sustainability Officer, StarHub. “We are excited to involve our customers in our sustainability journey, as they roll up their sleeves for the environment by planting trees to buffer against climate change. It is tough work, as many of our staff volunteers can attest to, but enormous fun, camaraderie, and fulfilment, as we green Singapore together, one tree at a time.”
To tie everything together, StarHub today unveiled a new ‘World’s Greenest Mobile Operator’ logo to brand all its Sustainability efforts. Splashed across an electric green circular economy symbol, the logo highlights StarHub’s commitment to enhancing its sustainability strategy and practices, with the arrows representing the 4Rs – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. This unveiling follows the recent recognition of StarHub as the World’s Most Sustainable Wireless Telecommunication Service Provider and Singapore’s Most Sustainable Telco, in 2022 Corporate Knights Global 100.
Sustainability is an integral part of StarHub’s strategy and operations. The company has been taking proactive steps to minimise its environmental footprint, by optimising energy usage, reducing waste, adopting green practices, and upholding the highest level of governance.
In 2022, StarHub has made significant strides in Green Tech initiatives, forging partnerships to ideate, create, and deliver smart and sustainable solutions. In January, it announced a collaboration with water technology scale-up Hydroinformatics Institute (H2i), to develop a cost-effective rainfall monitoring system using StarHub’s mobile base stations as rainfall sensors. This system will help the Public Utilities Board (PUB) obtain insights on rainfall intensities and better prepare for flash floods. In February, StarHub inked a collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS) to integrate its latest 5G and IoT solutions with the university’s smart campus innovations, to manage campus facilities more efficiently. One of which was the deployment of Singapore’s first 100% solar-powered campus WiFi by StarHub 5G.
