Singapore, 18 January 2023 – StarHub today was named as the world’s top telco (fixed and wireless) on the 2023 Corporate Knights’ Global 100 at the World Economic Forum.
Placed against more than 6,700 companies, StarHub earned the 34th position globally, improving from last year’s 72nd place – a recognition of its dedication in championing corporate sustainability. StarHub was one of four companies from Singapore which made it to the coveted list.
“It is truly an honour to be recognised as the World’s most Sustainable telco, a testament to the efforts across the whole of StarHub in adopting sustainable practices in all that we do. Environmental, social, and governance are core tenets of our business operations. Beyond risk management, we believe firmly that Sustainability is an opportunity. StarHub has fully embraced Green Tech as a pillar of our enterprise strategy, with the launch of our end-to-end Green Tech Managed Services last year. Through our comprehensive suite of connectivity, cloud networks and digitalisation solutions, we empower our customers to lower their carbon footprint, improve operational efficiency and reduce energy costs. Together with our customers and partners, we look forward to taking decisive action to build a smart sustainable city,” said Veronica Lai, Chief Corporate and Sustainability Officer, StarHub.
To determine the ranking, Corporate Knights evaluated companies against global industry peers on a suite of 30 quantitative key performance indicators, ranging from environmental performance and clean revenue, to employee well-being, diversity and inclusion.
StarHub’s approach to sustainability aligns with international standards and frameworks, including the Global Reporting Initiative, the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure, the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The company is setting ambitious decarbonisation goals to reach net zero. In 2022, it achieved 10% renewable energy use through the procurement of Renewable Energy Certificates, and has committed to increasing this to 30% by 2030. Deepening its investment in clean energy, StarHub signed a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement with Terrenus Energy in 2022, and will procure 100% of the renewable electricity to be generated from Terrenus’s 13.2MW solar farm on Jurong Island over the next 13 years.
On community support, StarHub partnered with organisations such as IMDA, Central Singapore Community Development Council, Community Chest, The Food Bank Singapore and Care Corner, sponsoring close to $1.9 million and reaching more than 12,800 beneficiaries including disadvantaged children and youths, lower-income families, and persons with disabilities and their caregivers.
For its outstanding environmental stewardship practices and outreach efforts, StarHub was recognised with various accolades. These include an “A-” leadership score for Climate Change 2022 from CDP, the Sustainable Business award from Global Compact Network Singapore, the Most Transparent Company in the Communications category from Securities Investors Association (Singapore), and Charity Silver Award from Community Chest.
